Made-to-measure solid oak wardrobe in Dedham

The job

A homeowner in Dedham wanted a wardrobe built to a far higher standard than anything available off the shelf. Nothing ready-made came close to what they had in mind, so they needed a made-to-measure wardrobe taken from first design all the way through to installation, with drawers, shelving and hanging space inside.

What we did

We handled the whole project ourselves. We drew up the design, ordered the materials, produced the drawings for the cutting list, then machined the units, doors and face frame in our workshop.

The carcasses are oak veneer units, and the doors are 5-part shaker style in solid oak. The drawer boxes are solid oak with traditional dovetail joints, running on Blum soft-close undermounted runners. The whole wardrobe was then sprayed in a 5% acrylic lacquer, chosen to keep the oak looking as close to natural as possible while still giving an extremely durable finish.

One detail we recommended was making the face frame oversize and cutting it into the wall. That meant the scribe to the wall is a single piece with no joins in it, which gives a much cleaner finish than a separate scribe strip.

Challenges

The customer had painters booked in, so the wardrobe had to be designed, made, finished and fitted to meet that schedule.

The result

The customer was happy with the end result: a practical, made-to-measure solid oak wardrobe in Dedham with the natural look of the oak front and centre. It is a good example of the fitted furniture we design, make and install from start to finish.
