Oak staircase renovation in Harwich

The job

The customer had already had the balustrade on their staircase changed by a previous builder, and they had never been happy with the result. It was also very unstable, which is not what you want on the main staircase of a home. They came to us asking about a staircase renovation in oak. Once we had looked at what was there, we explained that a completely new staircase would work out much the same as renovating the old one, and the finish would be far better. They agreed, and the job grew to take in the under stairs area and the hallway walls as well.

What we did

Everything started with templating and measuring on site, so the new staircase, the cupboards and the panelling would fit the hallway exactly. The staircase, the under stairs cupboards and the panelling were then made in our workshop from solid oak and moisture resistant MDF, and sprayed there in 2k lacquer, so the finish was even and hard wearing before anything came to site. With the parts ready, we removed the old staircase and the wall beside it. The new solid oak staircase went in with its metal balustrade, followed by the made to measure under stairs cupboards, hung on Grass hinges, and finally the wall panelling through the hallway.

The result

The work took around 20 days from the first templating to the last coat of lacquer. This hallway is the main entrance to the house, so it is the first thing anyone sees, and the customer is very proud to show it off. The oak treads and handrail sit against the black metal balustrade, the under stairs area now holds proper storage with open shelving and cupboards instead of dead space, and the panelling ties the hallway together. There is a lot of detail in a job like this, and it is that detail that makes it work once it is all put together. The customer has used us before and was extremely happy with the finished staircase.
