Fitted wardrobes in Manningtree

The job

A homeowner in Manningtree was struggling for storage space in the bedroom. We talked it through with them, listened to how they wanted to use the room, and looked at what a standard wardrobe would and would not give them. The brief was simple enough: get as much hanging and shelf space as possible out of the space available. Because we make every wardrobe to measure, the size and shape of the room was never the limiting factor.

What we did

We recommended going taller than a normal wardrobe. Most wardrobes run floor to ceiling with room for only one hanging rail and a shelf above, but because we build to any size, ours usually stand over two metres tall. That leaves room for a low rail and a high rail, which doubles the hanging space in the same footprint. We then made and installed the wardrobes with traditional five part shaker doors. Each door has a grooved moulded stile and a scribed tenon so it sits perfectly over the ogee mould, with a 6mm panel cut into the centre, all in moisture resistant Medite MDF. The doors hang on Blum hinges and the whole set was sprayed in PU paint in Farrow and Ball Cornforth White.

Challenges

The customer was having trouble finding a plasterer to get the room ready in time. Rather than let that hold the installation up, we arranged for a plasterer we work with regularly to come in and fit around the project, so the wardrobes could go in when planned.

The result

The job took two weeks from start to finish. The bedroom now has far more usable storage than it had before, with two hanging rails instead of one, and the traditional shaker doors and sprayed finish suit the house. The customer told us afterwards that they keep coming back upstairs just to look at it. This is the sort of made to measure joinery we take on across Manningtree and the surrounding area.
