Fitted wardrobes in Dedham

The job

The bedroom in this Dedham home had a sloping ceiling running across one side, which is the situation an off-the-shelf wardrobe cannot deal with. A standard unit has a flat top at a fixed height, so against an angled ceiling it either has to stand well clear of the slope and waste the space above it, or it simply will not go in. The customer wanted the storage to follow the shape of the room instead of fighting it.

What we did

We set out two runs of bespoke wardrobes and cut them into the angled ceiling so the tops follow the slope exactly. That is only possible when the units are made for the room rather than bought in, and it is what turns an awkward corner into usable hanging space. The doors were made in a traditional shaker style and spray-finished in white PU paint in our own spray shop. Inside, the wardrobes were set out with hanging rails and shelving, and a pull-out shelf was built into the run between the two blocks. The scribing at the top is the detail worth looking at: the units meet the sloping ceiling with a continuous line and no packing or filler strips on show.
