Fitted wardrobe in Harwich

The job

The customer had a large wall in their home in Harwich and wanted to make full use of every bit of it, rather than fitting something standard and losing the space around it. We went through the options with them and listened to what would actually work day to day, then designed a made to measure fitted wardrobe to suit the whole wall.

What we did

We recommended an oak lacquered interior, both for the look of it and because it stands up well to everyday use. The run was measured and templated on site first, then the units were made in oak with oak drawer boxes and grooved to take the lighting. The doors were made handleless and sprayed in two part paint, finished in Farrow and Ball pitch blue, so the front of the wardrobe reads as one clean face. The customer wanted a TV in the centre, so we built an oak frame around that space, which gives the run a centre feature and sets off the painted doors either side. Materials were oak veneer, solid oak and Medite MDF MR grade, with Grass drawer runners and hinges, Hafele lights, a 10% PU gloss lacquer on the oak and a 10% PU sheen paint on the doors. The drawers run on soft close under mounted runners, so there is nothing on show, and the lights come on automatically as the doors are opened.

Challenges

There was a chimney breast in the middle of the wall and it sat slightly off centre, so the layout had to be set out around it rather than simply divided in half.

The result

The fitted wardrobe took three weeks from template to finish, and the customer was very happy with it: an oak interior with lighting throughout, a modern handleless front, and a centre oak feature that pulls the whole wall together.
